KCIS Scholarship Winners

As a vibrant school, King's College International School hopes to make more students and parents aware of the various learning opportunities we offer for student growth and development through our scholarship programme.

We value outstanding students who are curious, motivated and courageous. We encourage our students to excel in many areas including academics, science, technology, arts, community service and sports.

We have given out nearly CNY 200,000 scholarships since the launch of our scholarship programme, and we have been proud to find that the students at KCIS are as outstanding as we expected.

Let's meet a few of our wonderful students.

Gloria C
Grade 8

01. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Gloria Chen. I joined KCIS in the very beginning. I have been here since the 2018-2019 school year, which means that this is my sixth year here. I also have a younger sister in grade 6 called Nina. Some of my hobbies include basketball and karate. I love school and I think our school is a fun place where we can learn so many different things every day. I hope to develop myself further in this wonderful community and I look forward to every year I will get to spend on this campus.

02. How do you feel about receiving this scholarship?

At first, I was a bit surprised because I didn't think I would get it twice in 2 school years. But I am really happy and proud of myself because I started at the bottom of things. Now, receiving this scholarship for the second time, I know that the school has faith in me and with the courage from KCIS and my own inner strength, I know what it takes for me to be successful later on.

03. What is the most impressive experience you have had with KCIS? What's your favourite thing about KCIS?

I think my favourite thing about KCIS is the teachers here. They are such wonderful teachers who helped me along the way. I love to chat with them and spend my free time with them. Since I don't have that many friends at school, I know that the teachers here are the people who hear me out and support me throughout the school year. I've made great relationships with the teachers, they are reliable and trustworthy people.

04. What is the support that KCIS offers to you? What skills do you develop?

Here at KCIS, I've met so many different people of so many different backgrounds, whether they are teachers or students. KCIS gives me so many opportunities to work with different people with different personalities. This will prepare me for my future out into the world beyond.

I've learned to collaborate with all my classmates and how to deal with bullying or being left out. I understand people better and know what people are suitable to be friends with. All these years, I've made many great friends, some who moved to a different school, some who moved to a different country. I've received so much support from my classmates and they've made me a better person in general.

05. Can you share any specific achievements or experiences that you feel contributed to your selection for this scholarship?

I was the secretary of the junior high student council last year and together, we've made our school a better place. I've also participated in sports day and won four gold medals in the four events I've participated in. During class time, I also participate a lot in class discussions and raise my hand every time I think I know the answer to that question. Except for those, I think I also got really good grades and full marks on most tests.

Since I was in grade 1, I've been learning karate and doing many other sports. Being at so many competitions made me adapt and become a calm, clear-minded person. I am resilient when things are tough and get on quickly after something bad happens. I've become a self-disciplined person and can manage my own time wisely. I know how much time I should spend on studying different courses and how much time I get to relax. I always put work before play and always finish things quickly and move on. I don't normally procrastinate and I don't run away from problems. I face them. I always set goals for myself and most often, I reach them. Just having all these traits makes me strong as a person.

06. What advice do you have for other students? What would you tell them based on your own experiences?

Personally, I love school. I think school is a really fun place to be. I think the first step to opening the door to success is just loving what you are doing. Like Warren Buffet said 'There comes a time when you ought to start doing what you want. Take a job that you love. You will jump out of bed in the morning. I think you are out of your mind if you keep taking jobs that you don't like because you think it will look good on your resume.' This goes the same for the students in our school. If you don't have a passion for learning or a passion for school, then you will lack inner courage. Don't do something just for the sake of doing it because it won't help you in the end.

I love coming to school and all the subjects the school teaches us. So my message or advice for the other students here is 'embrace this opportunity you have. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You may not want to go back to school later in life, so grab hold of this opportunity and bring the best out of yourself in the years you've got left at KCIS and try your best to make yourself a better person.'

Nini S
Grade 3

01. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Nini and I am from Taiwan, China. I came to KCIS in 2021, I only went to KG for one semester.

02. How do you feel about receiving this scholarship?

I felt excited when I received this scholarship, I mean extremely excited! My mum even prepared a cake and flowers for me. She didn't expected at all.

03. What is the most impressive experience you have had with KCIS? What's your favourite thing about KCIS?

Everyting! Such as each of the activities and what I learned in class.

04. What is the support that KCIS offers to you? What skills do you develop?

A lot! KCIS offered me the opportunity to appear on stage. It makes me more and more confident and courageous. I took part in two big plays at school last year. I enjoyed it very much.

My English has improved a lot so far. I couldn't understand anything when I was learning at G1, my teacher was very patient and gave me encouragement. It is not just about learning skills,  KCIS also teaches me:

Respect, Compassion, Honesty, Collaboration and Responsibility. Be yourself better!

05. Can you share any specific achievements or experiences that you feel contributed to your selection for this scholarship?

Firstly, Behavior well. Secondly, listen carefully in class. Don't worry if you don't understand the questions. Third, finish the homework assigned by the teacher carefully.

06. What advice do you have for other students? What would you tell them based on your own experiences?

Try no matter what! Extensive reading can bring us infinite pleasure and expand our knowledge. Take advantage of spare time.

Doody C
Grade 8

01. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I am from both China and Malaysia. I joined KCIS when the school was opened in 2018.

02. How do you feel about receiving this scholarship?

I feel extremely surprised about receiving the scholarship. The feeling was indescribable, when I got up the stage, I was still overwhelmed with disbelief and amazement. Until I got home, I recovered from surprise and shared this honourable reward with my parents.

03. What is the most impressive experience you have had with KCIS? What's your favourite thing about KCIS?

My most impressive experience I have had was the introduction to our school. I came from a relatively small school compared to KCIS. I felt like I could get lost on the way to lunch in the canteen because it was a maze. Secondly, I am a sporty person, the gym was extremely spectacular to me. There are 3 basketball courts in the massive gym and they were covered with different lines representing different sports. This easily became my favourite part of the school because I can do all the sports that I am familiar with in this beautiful gym. In addition, I learned a lot of new types of sports at school.

04. What is the support that KCIS offers to you? What skills do you develop?

Like what I said before, the sports facilities were the biggest and the most important support KCIS offered me, I enjoyed myself immensely during most of the PE lessons. Academically, I received an astounding amount of support from my teachers in different fields. So I would not receive the scholarship without their help. I developed different skills in CCA like debate, swimming, table tennis and mathematics. These helped me in my studies as well.

05. Can you share any specific achievements or experiences that you feel contributed to your selection for this scholarship?

I achieved relatively good grades in the exams and I had practiced many papers during my own time. In physical field, maybe my medals in the swimming gala helped.

06. What advice do you have for other students? What would you tell them based on your own experiences?

Work hard, and I believe that definitely doing extra learning in your own time will help to get the achievement. Keep going, do not give up. Try to push yourself to your limit or even beyond your limit to reveal the best of you, to be better than the previous you.

Who is eligible to apply for the scholarship?

Head of School Awards

Head of School awards are given based on overall performance throughout the year. We do not only consider students’ academic achievement, but also take into consideration behaviour, attitude, effort and enthusiasm. The winners of these awards are typically students from G1 to G8 who have received the highest number of merits throughout the whole academic year.

EP Award

The EP Award is given to the student in G6-8 who has achieved the highest overall academic success over the course of the whole academic year. This is decided by taking into consideration grade books and assessments in all subjects as well as formative teacher assessments.

We look forward to more and more incredible young people joining us to develop themselves and expand their boundaries in the fertile soil of KCIS Wuxi.
