Primary
Last week was a fantastic and engaging Numeracy Week across Grades 1–5 at KCIS, with students diving into the world of measurement through hands-on activities, problem-solving, and collaborative learning.
Throughout the week, students explored different aspects of measurement in meaningful and practical ways. From weighing everyday objects to better understand mass, to learning how to convert between grams and kilograms, students developed both their confidence and accuracy in using standard units.
In addition, learners investigated length, carefully measuring avariety of items and comparing results, while others tackled real-life time problems, helping them make sense of schedules and durations. Money-based challenges encouraged students to apply their numeracy skills in practical contexts, while capacity activities allowed them to explore volume.
A highlight of the week was the class Jeopardy quiz, where students worked collaboratively in teams to solve a range of mental maths questions. It was great to see students supporting one another, thinking critically, and celebrating their successes together.
Junior High
During the celebration of Numeracy Week in Junior High at the International Section, the theme this year was “Exploring Maths in Architecture and Design.” Students participated in a variety of engaging projects designed to promote the application of mathematics in real-life situations to solve specific problems.
Communication played an important role throughout the projects, both in written and oral form, as students used mathematics to justify their decisions and explain their designs.
Grade 6 students designed and constructed bridges using popsicle sticks that spanned a fixed distance of 30 cm. The winning team presented a bridge capable of supporting 45 kg!
Grade 7 students created proposals to redesign the balcony space into a functional recreational area for break time. They first presented their ideas to our Principal, Mr. Mike Hindle, who selected the three best teams. These teams then presented their projects to our Executive Principal, Ms. Fiona You,including budget calculations and a fundraising strategy to obtain the necessary funds.
Grade 8 students designed 3D roof models, built to scale, to provide cover for the recreational area proposed by Grade 7. Some models supported up to 35 kg, but they were not practical because they left limited usable space. The winning teams created more realistic designs that supported 30 kg and 20 kg respectively.
The enthusiasm, creativity, and effort demonstrated by the students made this celebration a great success. Numeracy Week provided a valuable opportunity for students to experience how mathematics can be applied to design, modelling, and problem-solving in real-world contexts.
