In April, the hills of Wuxi are draped in lush greenery, and the misty waves stretch across Yuantouzhu. When young students from the tropics of Thailand meet the gentle spring of Jiangnan, an educational dialogue across borders quietly unfolds on the campus of King's College International School, Wuxi.
Welcome, friends from Bangkok!
The smooth progress of this exchange activity is rooted in the deep inter-school cooperation within the King's global campus system. As sister schools within the group, King's College International School Bangkok and King's College International School Wuxi have always maintained close ties, committed to building a truly international education community.
This event was not only an exchange and sharing of educational resources between the two schools but also a deep resonance of teaching philosophies and cultural understanding. It opened a window to the world for students from both places, bringing cross-cultural communication from textbooks into reality.
Part 1 Integration – Daily Life
A Warm Opening
On Tuesday morning, the school held a brief but warm ceremony to welcome the visiting teachers and students from Bangkok. School leaders expressed their sincere welcome and reviewed the long-standing friendly cooperative relationship between the two schools.
During the ceremony, Wuxi students presented carefully prepared singing performances, conveying the host's enthusiasm through music. Afterwards, student council representatives shared practical "tips" about campus life to help the Bangkok students settle in more quickly.
After the welcome ceremony, the students quickly grew closer through icebreaker games and a buddy system. Each Bangkok student was paired with a Wuxi buddy, laying the foundation for their week of shared learning.
Sitting Together in an International Classroom
After the welcome ceremony, the Bangkok students walked into the classrooms of their buddies and sat down at the same desks. As an international school for children of expatriates, the KCIS Wuxi classroom itself brings together students from various cultural backgrounds. Group discussions in English class, problem-solving approaches in math class, and hands-on experiments in science class — though the languages differed, their passion for learning was universal.
During breaks, Thai, Chinese, English, Korean, and other languages intertwined in the hallways. The different languages did not become barriers; instead, they made every interaction feel more authentic and precious.
Hands-on Chinese Culture
The daily cultural experience classes in the afternoons were the most anticipated part for the Bangkok students.
In the bamboo flute class, students from the tropics brought the bamboo instrument to their lips for the first time. The intermittent sounds they produced drew gentle laughter. In the Wing Chun class, they followed the teacher to practice horse stances and punches — their movements were a bit awkward but exceptionally focused. In the calligraphy class, they unrolled rice paper and held brushes, attempting to write common Chinese characters in different scripts, feeling the beauty of the Chinese language through every stroke.
The dumpling-making session was the liveliest. In the cafeteria, the Bangkok students gathered around tables, learning to putfillings into wrappers and pinch pleats. The finished products came in all shapes — some looked like buns, and some simply split open. But after boiling,no one cared about appearances; everyone enjoyed the dumplings they had madewith their own hands.
Part 2 Blossoming – Farewell
A Performance Co-created by Both Schools
At the closing ceremony on Friday afternoon, students from both schools performed Thai dances and songs together. Everyone on stage told the story of this week in their own way.
During the gift exchange, leaders from both schools presented commemorative gifts to each other, expressing the deep bond between the institutions. Our school gave the Bangkok teachers and students specially prepared customized souvenirs, encapsulating the memory of KCIS Wuxi in small tokens. The Bangkok school also returned commemorative gifts to express gratitude for our warm hospitality. The paired students also exchanged small gifts with each other, leaving warm mementos of their week of shared learning.
Part 3 Walking – Jiangnan
Discovering Wuxi Through Ancient Towns, Fortresses, and Wetlands
During the activity period, the visiting teachers and students took time outside of class to tour Huishan Ancient Town, the Three Kingdoms City and Water Margin City, and Shangxianhe Wetland Park.
In Huishan Ancient Town, they walked along the bluestone-paved paths, admiring the whitewashed walls and black tiles, the small bridges and flowing water, experiencing the tranquility and depth of this thousand-year-old town. At the Three Kingdoms City and Water Margin City, the magnificent historical architecture amazed the Bangkok students, sparking a keen interest in Chinese history and literature. Shangxianhe Wetland Park showcased the modern ecological development of Wuxi, where the visiting group experienced another charming facet of the city amidst the lake and water views.
Part 4 Epilogue: Departure and Hopes
The week passed in a flash. On the afternoon of April 12th, the Bangkok teachers and students departed from Shanghai Pudong Airport and returned to Bangkok by plane.
Afterword: Education Builds Bridges of Understanding
The visit of the students from the Bangkok campus was a successful practice of sharing educational resources within the King's global campus system, and even more, a vivid lesson in international mindedness. It allowed our students to learn, from the perspective of hosts, how to share culture and connect with the world. It also allowed the Bangkok students, as experiential learners, to deeply perceive a multi-dimensional,authentic, and vibrant modern China.
As an international school for children of expatriates, KCIS Wuxi brings together students and teachers from all over the world. This type of inter-school exchange perfectly aligns with the multicultural understanding and global citizenship that we advocate for every day. The highest achievement of education is to build bridges of understanding. When youth stories are told in multiple languages, we are looking forward to a future that is more diverse, more inclusive, and more resonant.
3500 kilometers is not far when friendship is evergreen. Looking forward to the next reunion!
